Obituary of John L. Roy Fulmer

Private committal services will be held for John Fulmer who passed away peacefully at his Santa Cruz home on September 26th, at the age of 89. Born in Santa Cruz, he attended Branciforte School and graduated from Santa Cruz High School. Mr. Fulmer served his country during WW II in the US Army Corps as a lead navigator of B 24's US 8th Division over Germany. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with an Oak Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He attended University of the Pacific, worked as a concessionaire at Big Basin State Park and later farmed in Salinas for a time. Mr. Fulmer then began a career in retail sales on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk which he operated as Fulmer's Gift Shops for more than 44 years. Upon his retirement, he and wife Bebe enjoyed traveling. Mr. Fulmer was Life Member of American Legion Post # 593 and was also the first ever Commander of District # 28. He was an avid fisherman and experienced model airplane builder. He became a licensed pilot after his days as navigator on B 24 Airplanes, and could always be found following some kind of sporting event on television. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, Ruth and Bill De Spain of Prunedale, his daughter, Susan Griffin of Manteca, his five grandchildren: Debbie Harris, James Harris and his wife, Stephanie, and Kelly, Doug, and Chris Griffin. He also leaves his beloved great grandchildren: Grace Smith and her husband Rick, Peter Aspesi, Shawnicy Griffin, Owen Griffin, Quinncy Griffin, Joshua Griffin, Balie Smith, Heather Smith, and Jonathan, Julian, Devon, and Jaxon Harris. Mr. Fulmer is also survived by his brother, Richard Fulmer of Orland, CA; daughter-in-law, Kumphan Harris of Santa Cruz, and great-great grandson Joshua Aspesi. He was a very loved family man. Mr. Fulmer was preceded in death by his father and former Mayor of Santa Cruz, Forest Fulmer, his mother, Maybel Fulmer, his wife Bebe, his brother Donald, his son Steven Harris, and infant daughter, Grace. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony beside his late wife and daughter and Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno.
