Obituary of Steven Craig Glenn

Steve left on a new journey just after the sun had set on the 8th of April, in his own home and in his own way, with his wife and children beside him. A native of Amboy Illinois, a kind and good, Midwestern man, Steve made Santa Cruz his home for over 30 years. He dedicated his life to serving others, beginning at the age of 16 when he took an afterschool job working in a State run institution assisting the developmentally disabled residents. He continued this line of work while receiving his Bachelor's degree from the University of San Francisco as a Rehab Administration specialist. Continuing the theme of his life of helping others, he became the founder and owner of Oceanside Supported Living and Safe At Home Senior Care. The impact of the autonomy, dignity and quality of life he helped create for the clients he served and the hundreds of people he employed and mentored over the years are immeasurable. His love and commitment to others will be a resounding echo in the lives of all he touched. Steve was proud of the community he lived in and showed it by the many generous deeds that were done by him quietly, often anonymously and unknown to those who benefited from them. He loved baseball and the San Francisco Giants. One of his fondest memories of 1991 occurred when he was President of the Capitola Chamber of Commerce and was given the honor of throwing the first pitch at a San Francisco Giants game. He was thrilled with that experience. He had a love for sports, baseball in particular and joined the Board of Directors of the Capitola /Soquel Little League. Steve attended every game his son Daniel played and was a constant source of encouragement and love. He was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed bass fishing in lakes throughout the United States with his children. He had a love for basketball and helped coach the 5th grade basketball team at Good Shepherd Catholic School and years later, was particularly proud attending all of his youngest son, Daniel's basketball games and together with his 4 sons, Steve attended many Oakland Warrior games. He was exceptionally proud of his only daughter Naomi, of the fine, young woman she had become and the great academic achievements she made and continues to make in her life. He had a very special place reserved only for her, in his heart. Steve's greatest love and most important aspect of his life was his family. He reveled in watching his children grow into young adults, guiding, loving and mentoring them. He is beloved and missed immensely by his wife and best friend of 25 years, Cindy Glenn, his son's Spencer Glenn of Pacific Grove, Ryan Colligan (and wife Debra) of Soquel, Nickolas Colligan of Aptos, Naomi Glenn of San Francisco and Daniel Glenn of Soquel. Steve had a brief, but profound impact on his young, foster child, Isaiah and was a positive male role model and father figure to many who had the good fortune to cross his path. Steve loved and was particularly close to his nephew Matt Glenn (and his wife Amy) of Missouri, niece Rachel Henry of Dixon Illinois. Steve also leaves behind his mother, Jean Rock of Norwalk Ohio, brother Gavin (and wife Peggy) of Amboy Illinois, brother, Allan (and wife Judy) of Dixon Illinois, and big sister, Barbara Hickey (and husband Mike) of Norwalk Ohio and Stepmother Rita Glenn of Amboy, Illinois. He is also survived by his brother in law Tom Daters of San Jose, sister in law Jina Baer of Menlo Park, Sister in law Joy Rodriguez of Seattle and step mother in law Lynda Daters of Sacramento. He is survived by one grandson, Nicolas John Colligan of Modesto. Steve also leaves behind his two lifelong friends, Gene Stymiest and Andy Pereira of Santa Cruz with whom he consulted, loved and admired, laughed with and about, and enjoyed a deep, never ending friendship with. As Steve wished, there will be no funeral services. A celebration of his life will be held this summer and announced at a later date. In lieu of acts of charity in his memory, Steve asked that we remember his often quoted solution to the plethora of problems often brought to him, "Let's just love each other. It's as simple as that."
