Doris Alfred

Obituary of Doris May Alfred

A private committal service is planned for Doris Alfred who passed away on November 18, 2013 in Santa Cruz. Born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada on October 23, 1923, she was 90 years old. Doris lived in the Santa Clara County for many years, working there as a file clerk for county law enforcement. She retired to Salem, Oregon, and later moved to Santa Cruz in 1999. She was a very talented quilt maker and her family will forever cherish the many beautiful quilts that she created. Perhaps the most unique hobby or pleasure of hers, was walking. Doris would often walk miles upon miles throughout Santa Cruz. She personally knew all the inhabitants of the San Lorenzo River Bank and their dilemma's; walking by them and with them along the entire river levy, while well into her mid-eighties. Her family often commented that if there was a pedestrian walkway or route, Doris would take it just for the sake of walking. Her adventurous sprit will be missed by all those who came to know her. She is survived by her four sons, James Alfred of Seattle, Terry Alfred of Santa Cruz, Dan Alfred of Cincinnati, and Bud Alfred of Cupertino. She also leaves her sister, Shirley Olsen of Seattle, and 8 beloved grandchildren. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland Oregon beside her late husband, Stanley Alfred who preceded her in death in 1996.
