Obituary of Gary Lee Hintz

Gary Lee Hintz passed away on January 15, 2024 at home with his loving wife of 53 years. He was born on October 15, 1944 to Reverend August H. Hintz and Marcella Steglich Hintz in Arcadia , CA, with three older siblings, Luther, Darlene and Janice. As a child he was known for his boundless energy, love of the ocean and music (especially the trumpet). His dad took calls for service in the Lutheran church, having built a church and congregation in Woodland after Arcadia and eventually ending up in Long Beach where Gary finished high school. Then he headed off to college attending Cal Lutheran and then finishing with his Bachelor of Science from Cal State Sacramento. He gained his M.B.A from Santa Clara University in 1977 and made a career in Fraud Risk Management.

Gary met his future wife, Diane, in San Luis Obispo when he was stationed at Camp Roberts. They married on June 20, 1970. They eventually settled in Santa Cruz in 1974 where they raised their two children, Chris and Katie.

After retirement Gary dove into his cherished hobbies, reading, golfing, telling stories and especially singing. He absolutely loved singing with the Santa Cruz Chorale and served on their board for many years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Diane Hintz of Santa Cruz, his daughter and son-in-law; Katie and Conrad Mulligan of Santa Cruz; his son and daughter-in-law Chris and Christianne Hintz of Reno, NV. Gary also leaves behind his beloved granddaughters Teagan and Gemma Mulligan, brother Luther Hintz, sister Darlene Fredericks, and sisters-in-law Lynne Deane and Janet Rouse. And many extended family members and close friends that loved him dearly. A celebration of life will be scheduled later in the spring.

Gary’s legacy of unconditional love, song and laughter will forever live on through us all.
