I met Al Mitchel when I was hired as a lifeguard by the city in 1971—after having already spent six years on the beach in So California. The next year when I was promoted to guard captain, Al was immediately supportive, a mentor which I sorely needed. I knew the profession, but it was Al who helped me navigate through the surprisingly complicated politics to get things done. Al never strayed from his commitment to ocean lifesaving. He was a leader, a driver in the effort to professionalize state and city lifeguards, and moreover, to get public recognition of both skills required and importance to our community. Al supported me, but also was quick to let me know when I had a dumb idea, of which I had plenty. We had a great time organizing the early days of the re-born annual Rough Water Swim around the wharf. Al and Ruth opened their home to my wife and I, another act of friendship. Al was just a really good guy. My heart goes out to Ruth and family.

We are all richer in our lives by knowing uncle Al. I treasure the time we spent together, especially this past year. Semper Fi.
And much love
