I had the pleasure of having Professor Sharp as my faculty advisor and wrote my undergraduate thesis on English history under his supervision. I still have his recipe for homemade beer and occasionally use it. Despite his being a Scotsman, a Dissenter, a Bevanite socialist, and cheap to boot (a compliment where he comes from); and despite the fact that he is a friendly, down-to-earth, and kind-hearted man, I must say that he is a proper Christian gentleman with all the virtues and none of the vices that the term implies. They say heaven is a guitar store - I think he will like it there.

Ken was human and he was a busy man. I hope he is in a good place and has blessings all around him. I hope Buchanan has awareness of his family life. How it compares to his professional life, and all of his fears are no more… Let him see his family in good light and loving ways… May his family share goodness and health.

Professor Sharp (Buc) was a strong and positive influence on my development as an historian and as a teacher. His kindness, insight and humor were legendary among his students. Among his graduate students, the breadth and depth of his knowledge inspired awe. I'm sure I speak for many when I say there are moments from his seminars and classes that I will never forget. My sincere condolences to his family.

Matt Osborn was frustrusted with him for going back in history instead of going forward. I am rather surprised to learn that Buc didn't go all the way back to Roman Britain. Frankly, I do not know of any historian who is as well read as he was. He wrote so little because he cared more about learning the truth about the past than making a name for himself, which spells integrity. We were all fortunate to have him as our teacher.

Farewell to my friend old friend
Buchanan Sharp. We taught together, played golf together, fished together, socialized together, and now and then enjoyed a drink together. He was a gifted historian and a valued servant to the university. His marriage to Meg was deeply rewarding to both of them. They deserved even more time together. Buchanan will be sorely missed.
