Tom was a really nice guy and probably one of the most chilled people ever and we will miss him coming over to see us in the UK. It's clear from the tributes here that everyone thought the world of him including us, Charlie and Caroline

Hi I’m Jess, toms granddaughter
I’ve known grandpa for as long as I’ve lived, I look up to him mentally and literally. It’s heartbreaking knowing that he’s no longer with us. To be honest, grandpa didn’t come to England often he would normally stay in America, but every time he came it would fill everyone with happiness and joy, each memory would be filled with laughter. I miss him, but I know although we can’t see him he can see us. He’s watching us from the front row. He wouldn’t want us to cry he would want us to smile and to be happy therefore I’m trying my best to stay happy ; to not cry. I hope along with being able to see see us he can here us !!

My name is Gemma Day, and I am Tom Mattson’s stepdaughter.
Tom lived a life full of adventure. When ever I think of him, I remember how humorous and clever he was. Most of my memories of him are tinged with humour and laughter. He especially liked to joke about my horses and why they always had such a ‘long face’!! It was so fun and so easy to be with him, he was a fountain of knowledge and one of the worlds genuinely interesting people. He was a brilliant stepdad and an amazing Grandpa to my two children and most of all an amazing husband to my mum. He supported my mum through many years of cancer treatment and for that I will be eternally grateful. He faced adversity in the paradise fires and although it had a huge impact on him, to lose his lifelong home and all his worldly possessions and memorabilia, he still managed to hold his head above water and find ways to make us laugh. Then to be told that he too had cancer and the dignity and courage he showed throughout, well all I can say is he inspired me. He made me a better person and I am proud to have known him. He was a true gentleman and an extraordinary person evidenced by the many friends he made along the way. I wanted to share a message that Tom sent me just after his 74th birthday.
Dear Gemma & Hedley. Thank you very, very much for the birthday videos and cards – I enjoyed them very much and they certainly helped make my day – 74 years on this planet! I feel like I have seen and experienced much – I’m fortunate to have been here this long, thanks again and have an excellent day. Sincerely and adios Tom. PS One of the great highlights of my life is being called ‘Grandpa’ I never thought that would happen! Grace, Max and Jessica are amazing.
I find myself delving back into my message stream because it gives me a sense of peace and comfort that I can still hear his voice in my head when I read the words he wrote.
Tom, we miss you and love you always.

Dearest Tom. You were a character who has lived life to its fullest, who inspired with both actions and words. Manly yet with a good and gentle soul. Inspiring and exciting yet unassuming. A true hero and father figure to so many and to me his stepson and friend.
It made me so proud and happy to see so many tributes to this wonderful man and that so many are feeling love for him.
I feel so privileged to have had Tom as a stepfather and learnt so much about what it means to be a man and a dignified human. His teachings will live on in me and in all the people that were fortunate enough to have had their lives touched by this incredible person.
I miss his cheerful face, his light hearted comments and even his corny jokes! I always thought of him as a second father and miss him deeply.
Lots of love to you Tom. You will be forever in my heart and my memories until I see you again for another adventure in the great beyond.

Tom and I became friends while on an India Fulbright Study Grant forty five years ago. He was adventuresome and enjoyed travel as much as I. The more exotic and bold the better. We also shared teaching experiences and coaching strategies. A visit to Paradise High School showed me how well prepared he was in the classroom and how students appreciated him. I will miss his zest for life and easy going manner as I look at photos he took climbing Egypt's pyramids, touring Jerusalem and Milan in my office..

My Favorite Coach and Teacher. But more than that, he was a father figure to me having lost my dad as a child. Fond memories of getting taken to my 1st pro ballgames. Good times on all of them. Glad to see he married and had a full life. God Bless you my friend and instructor in life.

I'm so sorry to hear about Mr. Mattsons's passing. I loved him as a teacher at Paradise High School. If I remember correctly he came as a student teacher in 1972 or 73?? I loved that he dressed up to teach his history class and was so positive and happy. Rest in peace Mr. Mattson, favorite teacher of mine.............Terri Johnson

I never took a class from Mr. Mattson but knew him as a kind, engaging, and cheerful teacher. From the comments and his obituary it's obvious he lived a full life that improved the lives of many people. All the best to his family and happy trails.

Mr. Mattson was one of the most inspiring instructors I ever had. I took his World Travels course in the early 1980s and still remember how he structured the course and the many personal stories and touches he added to make the history come alive. He inspired my own educational journey and many travel journeys as well. My sincere condolences to the family.

Soo sad. He was a great teacher. I enjoyed my class I had with him. Maybe 2 years before the fire I was visiting my parents and went garage selling and one of the places was his house. I hadn't seen him in probably 26+ years since I graduated. He remembered me and we had a nice chat. RIP Mr. Mattson

Mr Mattson was my teacher in the early 80s. He was great. I remember how he taught me about dignity, how people express it in different ways all over the world in different cultural settings. I am a social studies teacher now and when I get stuck with a lesson I often think What Would Mr Mattson do? Lucky to have known him and been his student. - Patri Collins

Tom came to PHS as a student teacher first- and I was fortunate to be in his first class. We had very lively discussions, and he told us we were going to be his sounding board for what worked and what didn't. He treated all of us like adults, not little school kids or even worse, dratted teenagers. I also had him for Student Government and together we (the class) accomplished a lot of changes for the betterment of the school. He was a very caring person, and well respected. I will miss him.

Oh, Mr. Mattson was THE BEST of teachers. His Western Civilization courses were a highlight of my time at Paradise High. He inspired all of us with his generosity and creativity. Above all, Mr. Mattson was kind. He stoked my lifelong passion for study and travel. Lessons learned in his courses aid me today as a university professor and professional performing artist. My siblings - PHS grads as well - also thought Mr. Mattson was tops. I’m so blessed my life intersected with this remarkable man.

I was so sorry to read this today in our local Chico paper. I was a graduate of PHS in 1976, and very active in school affairs. Mr. Mattson was my first student government advisor, and so enthusiastic about our ideas! His class was one I looked forward to every day, and his costumed portrayals were always a highlight. He definitely lived life to the fullest, and I know his family will miss him terribly. He will always be fondly remembered. Thank you for sharing his memory. Tracey Brott Holzwarth class of 1976
