Missy Poindexter was my college roommate and best beach buddy. At least one weekend a month, we’d come over the hill to Santa Cruz, hosted often at Manny’s, by Tom and Peg. After Tom passed, Peg and Jay would take all of us to Manny’s for Margaritas and Mexican food. Missy’s middle name was fun. She knew how to bring laughter and joy wherever she went. She was generous and kind, giving away all she had to everyone. Once when she was waitressing at the Pruneyard’s El Burro, I witnessed her messing up many orders because she was so intent on chatting and laughing with the customers. No matter the mistakes, the customers always went away smiling for having enjoyed the light touch of our dear Missy. From foreign films to Forest of Nicene Marks walks, from family Thanksgivings at the Poindexter estate in Aptos, from free tickets from Missy’s grandmother to see George Cleve and the SJ Symphony, from art galleries to bookstores to Missy’s beloved Aldo’s on the dock, we rollicked through life. Now our memories are all we have to endear us to one of the most endearing individuals on earth. Vaya con Dios, MIssy.
