I knew Marty since about 1959 when he was my next door neighbor. We played together as kids. Our paths crossed over the years and He was always very interesting and uplifting. He was a legend in his own time. Fond memories of Marty live on in my heart

I've known Marty for 15-20 years. Worked on our cars, surfing, Ragtime piano and the lord. He was a blessing to me and my family. We will miss him in every way. May the peace that surpasses all understanding be upon you and your family.

I know Marty !! and she said oh yeah? I don't think you know him better than me, I've been sleeping with him for over 30 years!!.
I certainly going to miss Marty the Mechanic a lot.

I'm particularly saddened by this loss, as he was a significant part of my early childhood experiences at the Point. He spent a great deal of time entertaining us Point kids in the 70's. We spent significant time hanging out at his house when he lived on 37th, about half-way down the street, and also at his house later on, when he lived right across from the O'neill house. He loved spending time with us Point kids. He also would frequently come over to the house and play my mom's piano, with his Southern Blues style, and that would bring a smile to mom's face. We never had visitors to our house growing up, so Marty coming over was always an exceptional moment. And I love how much respect he always showed showed to my mom--I think he recognized how difficult it was for her, raising all of us 13 kids. He always showed her a great deal of respect and honor, and that taught me how to show her respect as well. Thank you Marty!
Regarding memories and stories from my childhood involving Marty, he always had an open invitation for us kids to come hang out with him, from bonfires at the beach to him driving us kids around in the in the back of his El Camino. Here's my favorite memory, though: I was about 8 years old (1972), checking the surf at the Sewer block with Marty. Suddenly, one of the Point kids comes screaming down the ally on his bike and doesn't stop in time and goes down the stairs and breaks his arm. Marty and I take him to the ER to get him fixed up and, while waiting in the hall, a security guard walks by us and stops, sniffing in the air. She leaves and comes back with another guard and together they decide to clear the area because there's a gas leak. They tell us to leave, but we instead just start laughing. They say this is no laughing matter, but Marty says "Oh, yes it is!", and motions for them to come closer, as he then proceeds to breath on them, with his pungent garlic breath. They simply walk away in disbelief. Marty's garlic sandwiches and subsequent garlic breath are legendary! I will always miss you . . .
